Welcome to the Falkland Islands Karate Club

The Falkland Islands Karate Club as we know it today was founded by Jan McGuinness, 3rd Kyu in 2002.  Sensei Jan wanted an activity that she could share with children and karate fitted the bill.  Sensei Jan began her training in England but sought to continue her study of karate-do.  Jan brought her enthusiasm for this martial art to the islands and inspired many students to join the club.

Karen Rimicans joined the club in 2003 and took over running the Club in 2006.  The Falklands Club succeeded in securing the expertise of Sensei Dave Wilkins, 6th Dan, in 2003.  Sensei Dave in the Chief Instructor for the Leicester Karate Club and he has become the Falkland Islands Club's Chief Instructor too.

Dave has travelled to the islands on five occasions, two visits in 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009.  His partner Sensei Lauren Frearson, 4th Dan accompanied him to the islands in 2003.  Sensei Dave has trained all over the world with many experts in particular Sensei S. Cattle (1948-1995).  Dave was fortunate to be one of Sensei Cattle's students.

The club has benefited from the input of many Shotokan students who have taken on the role of supporting the club, teaching and inspiring others in the art of karate, namely Martin Fisher, 2nd Dan, Andrew Byekwaso 4th Kyu and Rob Granger 1st Kyu.

The Falkland Islands Karate Club is a not for profit organisation, any donations or sponsorship are greatly appreciated.

History of Shotokan Karate

Shotokan Karate is a traditional form of open hand fighting originally taught by Gichin Funakoshi in Okinawa (1868-1957).  The aim of karate training is to teach self defence and to aim for the perfection of character.  Membership of the karate club required students to respect these core values of karate-do.  Any application of karate techniques outside of the club or unprovoked attacks on others by karate students will result in expulsion from the club.
