Kumite – sparring

Sparring always begins with a bow and ends with a bow to your partner.  Shotokan karate is not a full contact sport.  Controlled sparring with a partner is practiced to allow students to put the basic techniques learned into practice.  As students progress, kumite develops from controlled, semi free and then free style sparring.  There are always clear rules to follow and breach of these rules could result in disqualification from a competition or being asked to leave the dojo.  Just listen carefully to instructions and work with your partner.
