Gradings are an important part in the development of all Karateka. Everyone gets nervous beforehand, particularly if friends and family are there to watch, so here are a few tips on how to improve your chances of passing:
Look the Part – Your Gi should be washed and ironed, hair should be neat and finger and toe nails should be trimmed. Remember to remove ALL jewellery or tape up that which can’t be removed. Remember to bow when you enter and leave the Dojo and when addressing Sensei.
Act the Part – A grading is much shorter than a normal training session but will be just as tiring. Make sure your punches, kicks and blocks are as strong as they can be and your stances are good. Remember to sit quietly while other students are grading.
Feel the Part – Turn up with plenty of time to allow you to focus. Spend some time on your own going through what you have learnt, making sure you are comfortable. If there is anything you are not sure about this is your last chance to check with Sensei. Whilst you may wish to speak with your friends you must think about yourself and your own grading first.
Sound the Part – Whenever you are asked to perform any actions during your grading it is important you say “Oss, Sensei” to show you have understood. If you have not understood, do not be afraid to ask Sensei to clarify, just raise your arm and wait for Sensei to notice. Remember to kiai when instructed.
Focus – You have trained for six months to get to this stage and now have five minutes to prove to Sensei you deserve a new belt. Don’t allow yourselves to be distracted by those around you or whatever else might be going on in the hall.
Enjoy – You know what you need to do, otherwise Sensei would not let you grade. This is your chance to show everyone how much you have learned. Make the most of the opportunity!
